Mad Science Provides Hands-On Learning Experience for GTMO Children

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Leona Mynes

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (NNS) -- Representatives from Mad Science of Jacksonville, Fla., visited Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, March 20-21, to show military children the fun side of science.

The event took place at W.T. Sampson Elementary School and during an outdoor festival aboard the facility.

"We brought Mad Science to GTMO for a fun, hands-on educational experience for our children," said Karen Simon, NS Guantanamo Bay Child and Youth Program (CYP) director. "We received a grant from Commander, Navy Region Southeast, off-setting the entire cost of the program and travel expenses."

Mad Science provided Guantanamo's children with a unique, interactive learning experience that taught them to have fun while learning scientific principles.

During Mad Science's presentations, owner Ali Nelson taught children about chemical reactions in an effort to create an interest in science at a young age. Nelson said the children in Guantanamo were smart, fun, and engaged in the learning process.

"I want to get children excited about science," said Nelson. "I would come back here any day to teach the children here about science. They rock."
