Internet-based technologies just over the horizon could
dramatically change how criminal justice agencies operate, according to a new
NIJ-supported study by the RAND Corporation. Based on feedback from a panel of
practitioners and technology experts, the report identified what upcoming
Internet technologies could do for criminal justice efforts.
Promising tools could reduce case backlog through remotely
conducted trials, enhance law enforcement investigations by integrating
criminal records across agencies, and securely monitor low-level offenders in
the community rather than jail. Many of these technological developments also
raise issues related to civil rights, privacy rights and cybersecurity that
must be addressed.
