April 11, 2010 - San Francisco — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized a shipment of counterfeit Apple iPhones at the San Francisco International Airport last Wednesday.
The shipment from Taiwan arrived at SFO on March 9, 2010. CBP Officers examined the shipment and discovered 2000 counterfeit iPhones. If these telephones were the genuine article, the combined retail value would be almost $1.2 million. CBP seized the counterfeit goods under authority of 19 USC 1526(e) and Regulatory Citation 19 CFR 133.21 for goods bearing counterfeit registered and recorded trademarks.
“CBP works diligently to detain and seize illegal contraband that is entering the country, while facilitating legitimate trade. Stopping imported counterfeit and pirated goods remain a high priority for CBP. No one should think of piracy and counterfeiting as minor crimes. In today’s world, intellectual property rights violations pose a serious threat to public safety and the economy” said Leticia Romero, acting director for CBP Field Operations in San Francisco.
