New Drone Boosts Sheriff's Department Capabilities

The White County Sheriff's Department in Indiana is among the latest law enforcement agencies to obtain an unmanned aerial vehicle. The department plans to use the technology for accident reconstructions, investigations and search/rescue operations.

Charlottesville's First Bomb-Sniffing Dog Joins the Force

The Charlottesville Police Department recently obtained a bomb-sniffing dog. The 2-year-old black Labrador retriever joined the department after graduating from a training program through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' National Canine Division. The dog can also detect firearms.

Athens Police Host Civilian Response to Active Shooter Training

The Athens Clarke-County Police Department in Georgia recently held a civilian response to active shooter training. The training is part of a program called Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training, which emphasizes the unification of police officers in how they respond to active threats and survival training for civilians.

Massachusetts Jails Expand Use of Opioid Addiction Meds

Massachusetts sheriffs are expanding use of opioid addiction medications in county jails to comply with a new state law. Jails participating in a pilot program are now offering all three federally approved opioid treatment medications: methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone.

New Visitor Rules for Va. Prisons Aimed at Curbing Contraband

In a bid to curb drugs and other contraband from getting into prisons, the Virginia Department of Corrections will limit inmate visitor lists to no more than 10 different people, beginning on January 15. Each inmate must submit a list by October 1 of up to 10 visitors that can be changed twice a year. Offenders with more than 10 immediate family members may request an exception to the limit.

Carroll County to Upgrade Detention Center Cameras, Receives Body Armor Grant

The Carroll County Board of Commissioners has voted to upgrade the county detention center cameras. The board also accepted a state grant that will help cover the cost of body armor vests for local law enforcement.
