SAFE KC: KCPD Uses Toothpaste, Shampoo and Conditioner to Reduce Violent Crime

The Kansas City (Mo.) Police Department partners with Giving the Basics, a program that provides toiletries to those in need. Badges for Basics holds pop-up events in high-crime and low-income neighborhoods; the community outreach project has also yielded investigative leads that have helped solve crimes.

Inmates as Actors: University of Denver Takes Theater to Colorado Prisons

As part of a partnership between the Colorado Department of Corrections and the University of Denver Prison Arts Initiative, inmates at Sterling Correctional Facility spent six months practicing and then performed "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility. Many of the participant inmates credit the program with making them better persons.
