Countywide Emergency Responders Meet for First-Ever Group Training Program

Hundreds of law enforcement and emergency personnel from Rutherford County in Tennessee are participating in a comprehensive training program to better coordinate response to major incidents and active threats. Officials plan to train roughly 1,200 personnel by the end of the year representing Rutherford County, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, La Vergne, Eagleville, Middle Tennessee State University and Motlow State Community College.

WCSO Deputies Get Body Cameras, GPS Trackers

The Walker County Sheriff's Office in Alabama is issuing body cameras to its deputies. A departmental policy governs how the cameras are to be used by deputies. The department also purchased GPS units to be installed in patrol vehicles to track location and driving habits.

Somerset Sheriff to Launch Active Shooter App Program for Schools

A program new to schools in Somerset County, Maine, will enable a teacher to push a button on a cellphone or other device in an active shooter situation to alert law enforcement officers in the area within four seconds. Law enforcement, including public safety dispatchers, will be alerted on their cellphones, mobile data terminals and other devices. Officers could immediately view on their devices the layout of the school and where the incident is occurring.

State to Fund Panic-Button App for Louisiana School Teachers

Louisiana is providing funding for K-12 schools to begin using a mobile safety app that will better alert authorities to emergencies on school campuses. Teachers and school officials can use the panic button app to quickly request immediate assistance from law enforcement or other first responders in the event of a health or safety emergency.

Indiana Allocates More Than $19 Million to School Safety

The Indiana Secured School Board has approved more than $19 million in matching state grant funds, which allows the board to partially or fully fund all top-priority projects identified by 429 schools in their applications to the Secured School Safety Grant (SSSG) program. The SSSG issues matching grants for eligible items and then schools match those funds at a certain level, either 25 percent, 50 percent or 100 percent. Examples of eligible items include funding for school resource officers and equipment and technology.

Vernon Police Join a Growing Trend of Offering Addicts an Option: Treatment Over Jail

The police department in Vernon, Connecticut, now has a program intended to move addicts into treatment rather than jail. The program connects addicts with recovery coaches to move them into treatment.
