STS-133: Discovery's Final Mission (transcript)

Space shuttle Discovery, the veteran spacecraft of NASA's shuttle fleet, waited on Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, to take its final bow, prepared to soar into space for its 39th and final mission.

Commander Steve Lindsey, on his fifth shuttle flight and third on Discovery, lead the way out of the Operations and Checkout building where the astronauts donned their orange flight suits.

Striding down the ramp and waving to a cheering crowd with Lindsey were Pilot Eric Boe, Mission Specialists Alvin Drew, Steve Bowen, Nicole Stott and Michael Barratt.

In an extraordinary gesture of respect for each other and the vehicle that would take them into space, the crew stopped for a quiet moment and huddled together before their momentous journey.

NASA Commentator Mike Curie: Go for main engine start. We have main engine start....2…1…booster ignition, and the final liftoff of Discovery, a tribute to the dedication, hard work and pride of America's space shuttle team. The shuttle has cleared the tower.

Space shuttle Discovery majestically lifted off the pad at Eastern Time February 24, on its STS-133 mission to the International Space Station, its final flight.

As the shuttle closed within 600 feet of the space station, it performed its rendezvous pitch maneuver, or back flip.

Discovery was the first spacecraft to perform this maneuver on its Return to Flight, STS-114 mission.

The back flip gives ground teams in Houston a chance to look over the heat shield to confirm it is in good condition before docking.

For the 13th time in its flight history, Discovery was guided gently toward the station's docking port.

A warm welcome from the Expedition 26 crew greeted the Discovery crew as they glided into the orbiting outpost through the hatch.

The first activity for some of the crew the next day was the installation of the Express Logistics Carrier -4, or ELC-4, onto the station's S-3 truss section.

Pilot Eric Boe and Mission Specialist Alvin Drew controlled the arm from the flight deck of the shuttle while Mission Specialists Michael Barratt and Nicole Stott manned the controls of the Canadarm2 from inside the cupola module, to grapple the carrier and move it into position.

Drew and Bowen spent the next night camping out in the Quest airlock after breathing pure oxygen to cleanse their blood of nitrogen, in preparation for their first spacewalk.

After stepping out into space, Bowen, perched at the end of the station's robotic arm, said he got the view of a lifetime before he began working on replacing the ammonia pump.

Bowen, who replaced Tim Kopra on the mission after a bicycle accident kept him earthbound, was in constant contact with Kopra who was at Mission Control, helping out from the ground , answering questions and providing input.

Back inside the station from his first spacewalk, Drew looked like a kid that just came back from a theme park.

Mission Specialist Nicole Stott: How was it?

Mission Specialist Alvin Drew: It was awesome -- oh man that was great -- the views were outstanding!

Mission Specialist Nicole Stott: You looked fantastic out there, you looked totally natural.

Mission Specialist Alvin Drew: I was faking it really well.

Mission Specialist Nicole Stott: Faking a little bit? Alright, go get some food.

On Tuesday, Stott and Barratt grappled and lifted the Permanent Multipurpose Module, or PMM, loaded with equipment and supplies, including Robonaut 2, out of Discovery's payload bay using the station's 58-foot robotic arm and installed it to the Earth-facing port of the Unity node -- completing the assembly of the ISS.

After the spacewalk, Mission Control radioed the joint crew members that mission managers had approved an extra day for the shuttle mission to set up the interior of the new Permanent Multipurpose Module.

Lindsey and station Commander Scott Kelly opened the hatch on the PMM and after a brief christening ceremony all of the crew members floated into the 21-foot long module.

Robonaut-2, still encased in its travel box was gingerly moved out of the PMM to its storage area and secured in place for future use.

Expedition 26 Commander Scott Kelly: Hello Mr. President, welcome aboard the International Space Station.

President Barack Obama: Well, look I wanted to call and just say how personally proud I am of you and all that you're accomplishing.

A special long-distance phone call was made from President Barack Obama to the twelve members on board the station congratulating them on their accomplishments.

The entire crew was occupied transferring and stowing thousands of pounds of equipment, setting up racks and science equipment.

After eight busy but satisfying days aboard the station, it was time for the Discovery crew to leave. Kelly wished them fair sailing, a safe trip back to Earth and a warm goodbye to space shuttle Discovery and appreciation for its outstanding support of the station.

Fond farewells shared, hatches closed, the shuttle undocked with the traditional ringing of the ship's bell.

Commander Lindsey spoke about this final day in space, final voyage for Discovery and its remarkable history.

Commander Steve Lindsey: On this final day on orbit when I think about Discovery, I think about all that. I think about all the people that went before us on this vehicle, but mostly what I think about are the thousands and thousands of people across the space shuttle program in these past 30 years who designed this vehicle, built this vehicle, have taken care of this vehicle and operated this vehicle, not just from the cockpit, but also those who operated this vehicle from the ground -- and that is her greatest legacy to me.

A last and a first took place on the same mission when the crew's wake-up song was performed live from Mission Control in Houston by Big Head Todd and the Monsters, singing their song "Blue Sky" on Discovery's last day in space. Good news from Mission Control informed the crew that they were cleared for a deorbit burn on the first landing opportunity at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The day was clear as a bell and picture-perfect as Discovery broke through the atmosphere from a brilliant blue sky -- trailing the twin sonic booms, heralding its approach.

Landing for the final time on Runway 15 at Kennedy's Shuttle Landing Facility at Eastern Time March 9, Discovery completed a flawless 13-day mission.

To its credit, space shuttle Discovery logged an incredible 39 missions, a total of 365 days in space, traveling 148.2 million miles by the end of its remarkable history.

Commander Steve Lindsey: I'm extremely proud of this crew here. My crew did a fantastic job, the ground teams did a fantastic job, we accomplished every objective we set out to do then and plus a whole bunch more. It was a privilege to be able to be in charge of her for just a couple of weeks and I'm sad to give her back, but I couldn't imagine giving her back to into better hands than this group right here.

Astronaut Scott Kelly Available For Interviews

HOUSTON -- After a five-month stay aboard the International Space Station, astronaut Scott Kelly will be available for live satellite interviews on Tuesday, March 22, from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Kelly and his crewmates, Russian cosmonauts Alexander Kaleri and Oleg Skripochka, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Oct. 7 (Oct. 8 Baikonur time). During the mission, Kelly served as commander of Expedition 26, the 26th crew to live and work aboard the space station. The trio spent 159 days in space and landed in Kazakhstan on March 16.

Aboard the station, the Expedition 25 and 26 crew members worked on more than 150 microgravity experiments in human research; biology and biotechnology; physical and materials sciences; technology development; and Earth and space sciences.

Kelly is from Orange, N.J. He has degrees from the State University of New York Maritime College and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He served as a pilot on shuttle mission STS-103 in 1999 and a commander on STS-118 in 2007.

The interviews air on NASA TV's Live Interview Media Outlet channel. The channel is a digital satellite C-band downlink by uplink provider Americom.

Expedition 26 Crew And Capsule Land Safely In Kazakhstan

WASHINGTON -- Expedition 26 Commander Scott Kelly and Russian Flight Engineers Alexander Kaleri and Oleg Skripochka safely landed their Soyuz spacecraft on the Kazakhstan steppe Wednesday, wrapping up a five-month stay aboard the International Space Station.

Kaleri, the Soyuz commander, was at the controls of the spacecraft as it undocked at from the station's Poisk module. The trio landed at ( local time) at a site northeast of the town of Arkalyk.

Working in frigid temperatures, Russian recovery teams were on hand to help the crew exit the Soyuz and adjust to gravity. Kaleri and Skripochka will return to the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, outside of Moscow, while Kelly will fly directly home to Houston.

The trio launched aboard the Soyuz TMA-01M spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Oct. 8, 2010. As members of the Expedition 25 and 26 crews, they spent 159 days in space, 157 of them aboard the station.

During their mission, the Expedition 25 and 26 crew members worked on more than 150 microgravity experiments in human research; biology and biotechnology; physical and materials sciences; technology development; and Earth and space sciences.

A quick succession of international space vehicles arrived on the station's loading docks during Expedition 26. The Japanese Kounotori2, or "white stork," H-II Transfer Vehicle 2; the Russian cargo ship Progress 41; the European Jules Verne Automated Transfer Vehicle; and space shuttle Discovery delivered more than 11 tons of supplies necessary for working and living aboard the station.

Kelly has logged more than 180 days in space, and Kaleri has more than 770. Skripochka has completed his first space mission.
Expedition 27 Commander and Russian Cosmonaut Dmitry Kondratyev and Flight Engineers Cady Coleman of NASA and Paolo Nespoli of the European Space Agency remain aboard the station.

A new trio of Expedition 27 flight engineers, NASA astronaut Ron Garan and Russian cosmonauts Andrey Borisenko and Alexander Samokutyaev, will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome no earlier than March 29.

Hatches Closed Between Discovery and Station

At , hatches were closed between space shuttle Discovery and the International Space Station. The hatches between the two spacecraft were opened at on February 26 and remained open for joint crew operations for a total of 7 days, 23 hours, and 55 minutes.

Prior to hatch closure, the shuttle and station crews exchanged farewells. Discovery Commander Steve Lindsey thanked station Commander Scott Kelly for the hospitality. Kelly responded, “It was a very successful time onboard. We enjoyed having you as guests, we’re going to miss you, and we’re going to miss space shuttle Discovery. Discovery been a great ship and has really supported ISS more than any other shuttle and we wish her fair winds and following seas. Thank you.”

Discovery’s six crew members will awaken to a special song with a surprise twist at Monday, “Theme from Star Trek” by Alexander Courage. It was the runner-up in the wakeup song contest - https://songcontest.nasa.gov/.

At Monday, Discovery will undock from station.

Mission Extended an Additional Day

Space Shuttle and International Space Station managers decided today to extend the STS-133 mission by an additional day, providing more time to unpack and outfit the Permanent Multipurpose Module and fill the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV-2) with trash before its planned late-March undocking.

At , shuttle Capcom Megan McArthur told Discovery Commander Steve Lindsey and station Commander Scott Kelly about the extension.

Second Spacewalk in Progress

The second STS-133 spacewalk began at , when Steve Bowen and Alvin Drew switched their suits to battery power.

This is Bowen's seventh spacewalk and Drew's second. It is the 244th by U.S. astronauts and the 155th spacewalk in support of International Space Station assembly and maintenance. Discovery Mission Specialist Nicole Stott is once again inside the station, choreographing the activities and coordinating communications between the spacewalkers and Mission Control in Houston. Station Commander Scott Kelly and shuttle Mission Specialist Mike Barratt are in the cupola operating the station's 58-foot long robotic arm during the spacewalk.

Bowen is EV-1, the lead spacewalker, and is wearing a suit with red stripes. His helmet camera displays the number 19. Drew is EV-2, wears an all-white spacesuit, and his helmet camera displays the number 20.

Drew will complete the last task related to the failed ammonia pump module the pair moved into a storage location on Monday. He will vent the remaining ammonia from the module into space, using a special tool to protect his spacesuit from any ammonia contamination. Once he's done, he'll remove the tool and place it back in the airlock.

Meanwhile, Bowen will ride the station's robotic arm to the Columbus module and retrieve a lightweight adapter plate assembly that was used to attach experiments to the outside of Columbus. Drew will remove insulation from the avionics assembly on the Express Logistics Carrier-4 and gather up three sets of stowage bags from the Crew Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) cart on the left side of the station's truss, or backbone.

The crew will move a sunshade away from the lens of a video camera near Express Logistics Carrier-4. The sunshade is partially obscuring the camera's view. Throughout the remainder of the spacewalk the pair will work separately. Bowen will ride the arm to the Dextre robot, where he will install a camera light and pan and tilt assembly and remove unneeded insulation while Drew installs a light on the CETA cart. From there, Drew will move to a radiator beam on the left hand truss segment and install insulation on its valve module fluid line. He also will tighten a loose radiator grapple fixture stowage beam that was installed on STS-131 and might be used to temporarily store handles that would be necessary if a radiator ever needed to be replaced. Next, Drew will head to the Tranquility node to remove insulation covering electrical connectors. Bowen will climb off of the robotic arm and install a lens cover on the arm's elbow joint camera, which will protect the lens from erosion that might be caused by visiting spacecraft thrusters. The rest of the spacewalk will be spent installing similar covers on other cameras.

Crew Enters Permanent Multipurpose Module; Prepares for Spacewalk

At , International Space Station Commander Scott Kelly became the first crew member to enter the newly-installed Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM). The PMM was attached to the Earth-facing port of the station’s Unity node earlier in the day and will provide 2,472 cubic feet of pressurized volume for storage and scientific use. Discovery and station astronauts will use their mission extension day to help unload cargo from PMM and dispose of trash in the HTV.

Module Activation Work Continues

Work continues on the activation of the Leonardo Permanent Multipurpose Module. The hatch is scheduled to open about STS-133 Flight Engineers Mike Barratt and Nicole Stott, along with Commander Steve Lindsey and station Commander Scott Kelly, spoke with reporters back on Earth. They were interviewed by KTRK-TV of Houston, and KING-TV and KOMO-TV, of Washington, Barratt’s home state.

Bowen, Drew Conducting First STS-133 Spacewalk


Alvin Drew is the 200th human to perform a spacewalk, his first. This is Steve Bowen’s sixth spacewalk. The first STS-133 spacewalk began at

Bowen, EV-1, is the lead spacewalker and is wearing a suit with red stripes, while Drew, EV-2, wears an all-white spacesuit. Bowen’s helmet camera displays the number 19 and Drew’s the number 20.

Bowen and Drew will install the J612 power extension cable in preparation for Tuesday’s attachment of the Permanent Multipurpose Module to the Unity node. Next, they will move an 800 pound failed pump module to External Stowage Platform 2 on the outside of the Quest airlock, where it will remain until it can be returned to Earth at a future time. They will install a camera wedge on the right hand truss segment to give the camera added clearance now that Express Logistics Carrier-4 is attached to the station. After that, they will move further down the right hand truss to the solar alpha rotary joint where they will affix two extensions to the station’s mobile transporter track, which will allow the transporter to travel the entire track length with the Crew Equipment Translation Aid cart and still reach all of the many worksites. They also will open and fill a metal cylinder with the vacuum of space, part of a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency activity called “Message in a Bottle.” The bottle will be returned to Earth for public display.

Discovery Mission Specialist Nicole Stott is inside the International Space Station, choreographing the activities and coordinating communications between the spacewalkers and Mission Control in Houston. Station Commander Scott Kelly and Discovery Mission Specialist Mike Barratt will operate the station’s 58-foot long robotic arm to maneuver the pump module and other hardware during the spacewalk.

This is the 154th spacewalk supporting assembly and maintenance of the space station and the 234th excursion conducted by U.S. astronauts.

Crew to Talk With Reporters

At 2:43 p.m. EST Discovery’s crew will be joined by station Commander Scott Kelly and Flight Engineer Cady Coleman to talk with reporters from The Weather Channel, WBZ Radio in Boston, WSB-TV in Atlanta and WTVT-TV in Tampa, Fla. At Mission Management Team (MMT) chairman and Space Shuttle Program Deputy Manager LeRoy Cain will hold a post-MMT news conference.

NASA TV to Show Russian Space Station Cargo Ship Arrival

HOUSTON -- The residents of the International Space Station will receive a second shipment of food, fuel and supplies this week. NASA Television will provide a live broadcast of the Russian cargo ship's arrival Saturday, Jan. 29.

Expedition 26 Commander Scott Kelly and Flight Engineers Cady Coleman, Páolo Néspoli, Alexander Kaleri, Oleg Skripochka and Dmitry Kondratyev will be standing by as the 41st unpiloted Russian Progress resupply craft automatically berths to the Pirs docking compartment at . NASA TV coverage of the new Progress' arrival at the station will begin at

The cargo ship is carrying three tons of supplies for the six crew members. It is scheduled to launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at on Thursday, Jan. 27 ( Baikonur time on Jan. 28). NASA TV will not provide coverage of the launch.

The shipment is set to arrive on the heels of the Jan. 27 rendezvous and arrival of the Kounotori2 H-II Transfer Vehicle 2 developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The European Space Agency's Automated Transfer Vehicle, Johannes Kepler, that is carrying additional supplies for the station is set to launch Feb. 15 on an Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana.
