Cobb Police to Receive New Personal Protective Equipment

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners has voted to purchase 600 ballistic helmets and 1,200 ballistic plates for Cobb police officers. The department initially purchased ballistic gear with a five-year warranty for all officers in 2014.

Phoenix Police Will Expand Use of Opioid Overdose Reversal Drug

The Phoenix Police Department has begun training and certifying patrol officers in how to use Narcan, an opioid overdose reversal drug. Earlier this year, the agency distributed Narcan to 100 specialty officers. Through a grant from the Arizona Department of Health Services, the department received 1,800 doses of Narcan, and will expand distribution and training to other officers.

In Cambridge, a New Approach to Training Future Police Officers

The police academy run by the City of Cambridge and Northeastern University is changing its curriculum to see if training officers in a different way can improve their ability to interact with the public. The updated curriculum reflects the change in what police have to respond to each day, like the increase in calls for psychiatric issues and overdoses. Another aspect of the academy is to get the recruits to go out and directly interact with all facets of the public.

Met Police to Use Drone to Catch Dangerous Drivers

The Metropolitan Police Service will use a drone in a crackdown on dangerous drivers in London. The unmanned aerial vehicle will target "road users engaged in dangerous driving, such as racing, that could potentially put others at risk," the force said. The drone will be used between July 22 and July 26.

Active Shooter Training at Wenatchee Valley College and Confluence Health

Wenatchee Valley College and Confluence Health recently hosted an active shooter training exercise on the Wenatchee Valley College campus and on portions of Central Washington Hospital. Participants in the event included Wenatchee Police Department, Chelan County Sheriff's Office, RiverCom, Washington State Patrol, Kittitas County Sheriff's Office, Chelan County Fire District 1, Confluence Health LifeLine Ambulance, Ballard Ambulance, Cashmere Fire Department, Cascade Medical, Lake Chelan Community Hospital, Life Flight, Airlift Northwest and students and staff from Wenatchee Valley College.

Jefferson County Sheriff Announces Job Training for Jail Inmates

Jefferson County, Alabama, is expected to launch a program in September aimed at making county jail inmates employable once they are released. The Renewed for Reentry Program partners with a community college, employers in central Alabama, the Dannon Project and the Steel Workers Trust. Inmates eligible for the program are those being held on nonviolent offenses.
