Boosting Light Output of Green LEDs

Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have developed a new method for manufacturing green-colored light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with greatly enhanced light output. The research team, led by Christian Wetzel, professor of physics and the Wellfleet Constellation Professor of Future Chips at Rensselaer, etched a nanoscale pattern at the interface between the LED's sapphire base and the layer of gallium nitride (GaN) that gives the LED its green color. Overall, the new technique results in green LEDs with significant enhancements in light extraction, internal efficiency and light output.

STREAMLIGHT® LAUNCHES NIGHT COM® UV

Versatile Tactical Light Features Six UV LEDs and Three Lighting Modes  

EAGLEVILLE, PA   –  Streamlight® Inc., a leading manufacturer of high-performance flashlights, has launched the compact Night Com® UV  flashlight, which features six UV LEDs to provide ultraviolet light for a variety of detection purposes. The versatile new light also provides a white LED for general and distance use.

Offering three separate lighting modes, the lithium battery-powered Night Com UV features a white C4® LED, and a total of six UV LEDs, including three 365 nanometer and three 390 nanometer UV LEDs.

“The Night Com UV is specially designed for professionals, such as police and security officers, automotive technicians and HVAC repairmen, who rely on ultraviolet light for detecting fraudulent documents, checking driver’s licenses, or for engine or HVAC leak detection,” said Streamlight President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Sharrah. “The light also is equipped with a powerful white LED for general purpose and distance use.”

A mode-selection switch lets users easily choose the desired lighting mode, including a high- or low-power white LED setting, or the UV LED setting.  The light also features a “safety” mode that ensures the light cannot be turned on by mistake during transport.

The light’s C4 LED has a textured reflector that provides a widespread beam, along with a sharp hotspot for distance use.  It boasts a 50,000-hour lifetime, and offers 115 lumens and 4,200 candela peak beam intensity on the high setting, and 50 lumens and 1,600 candela on the low setting.  On the UV setting, the combined six UV LEDs provide 24 mW measured system output and feature a 100,000 hour lifetime.

On high, the light provides 4.25 continuous hours of run time.  On the low setting, the Night Com UV runs for 13.5 continuous hours, and on the UV setting, for 10 continuous hours. 

Powered by the two included CR123A lithium batteries, the Night Com UV weighs only 5.44 ounces, measures just 5.40 inches in length and features an unbreakable polycarbonate lens. The flashlight also features a casing of machined aluminum with a matte black anodized finish and a non-slip knurled grip.  The light’s push-button tailcap switch provides for Momentary On and Hard Click On and Off operation.

The Night Com UV is IPX4-rated for water-resistant operation and is impact resistance-tested to one meter.  All openings are o-ring sealed.  It has an MSRP of $90.00. The light comes with a high-strength wrist lanyard and Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

STREAMLIGHT® LAUNCHES TLR-1 HP™ and TLR-1s HP™ GUN LIGHTS

New Lights Feature C4® LED Technology to Deliver 200 Lumens

EAGLEVILLE, PA – Streamlight® Inc., a leading provider of high-performance lighting equipment, has introduced the TLR-1 HP™ (high power) light, featuring enhanced lumen and candela capacity for use with long guns.  The TLR-1s HP™ provides the same features, as well as strobe capability.  Each light is also available in a remote switch model.

The TLR-1 HP and TLR-1s HP both use a shock-proof C4® LED to provide exceptional brightness, including 46,000 candela peak beam intensity and 200 lumens measured system output. The lights also feature a deep dish parabolic reflector which produces a long-range targeting beam while also optimizing peripheral illumination.

The new lights can be quickly mounted to a broad range of weapons using Streamlight’s one-handed snap-on/tighten interface, which keeps hands away from the muzzle.  The lights mount directly to all MIL-STD -1913 (Picatinny) rails and weapons with Glock-style rails.  A key kit with five interchangeable keys is included with each model to securely fit the light to the broadest array of rails.

The TLR-1 HP and TLR-1s HP are also available in models with a remote switch.  All models offer a tethered battery door and latch mechanism, which prevent door loss while providing easy battery replacement.  

The lights deliver 1.75 hours of continuous regulated run time, and come with two 3 volt, CR123A lithium batteries, with a storage life of 10 years.  In addition, the C4 LED is impervious to shock and has a 50,000 hour lifetime.

Both models weigh 5.3 ounces (5.6 ounces with remote switch), measure 4.83 inches in length (5.25 inches with remote switch), and are constructed with 6000 Series machined aircraft aluminum with a black anodized finish.  They also feature extensively live-fire tested impact-resistant construction.

The TLR-1 HP and TLR-1s HP are backed by Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. The MSRP ranges from $199.00 to $289.00, depending on the configuration.
