NASA Engages Public With New Custom Internet Radio Station

WASHINGTON -- NASA's mission of discovery and exploration will be showcased in a custom-produced Internet music radio station that is crafted specifically to speak the language of tech-savvy young adults.

Third Rock - America's Space Station is set to launch with a New Rock/Indie/Alternative format on Monday, Dec. 12. The station is being developed and operated at no cost to the government through a Space Act Agreement. Third Rock can be reached from NASA's home page, www.nasa.gov, and will soon be available through NASA iPhone and Droid mobile applications.

"NASA constantly is looking for new and innovative ways to engage the public and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers," said David Weaver, associate administrator for the Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "We have led the way in innovative uses of new media and this is another example of how the agency is taking advantage of these important communication tools."

NASA is collaborating with Houston-based RFC Media to launch the station.

"Today's 4G audience craves new music and enjoys finding it," said Pat Fant, RFC Media co-founder and chief operating officer. "We've pulled out the best songs and the deepest tracks from a full spectrum of rock artists across many styles and decades. NASA features and news items are embedded throughout the programming alongside greetings by celebrity artists."

Third Rock also will help partner companies fill high-tech job openings in the engineering, science and IT fields. In addition to the NASA Web Portal, the station will be available online in the future at the radio tab of Apple's iTunes and other sites.

"Exciting new music is being discovered online through specialty sites like Third Rock-America's Space Station, where listeners will hear about great new artists way before their friends hear of them."

We constantly encourage health care professionals and the medical industry to make new discoveries and breakthroughs.   However, these life extending treatment options, can not only be costly but take years away from a normal childhood—by keeping the child out of school sometimes for years.  And as a result, keeping a parent at home to care for and comfort the child -- meaning the loss of income and sometimes creating such a stressful environment that eventually breaks apart the family unit.  However, after enduring years of life extending health care in terms of procedures, protocols and medicines as a child, these same children get lost as young adults.  The same services, resources and care that helped them survive their childhood become more and more difficult to come by to attain "quality of life" care that allows them to return to school, go to work and resume a normal, healthy life. 

This week, we talk with Dr. Santi Bhagat, founder of Physician-Parent Caregivers (PPC), an advocate working to provide the necessary treatment and support systems so that this population can grow into truly healthy adults and are able to function socially and contribute economically to society.

Securing Smart Phones...Who Will Answer the Call?

Smart phones are everywhere and double as sophisticated audio/video recording devices, GPS locators, WiFi hotspots, mobile gaming devices and can even be used to make purchases at traditional retail stores, like Starbucks.  While all of this functionality can be wonderful to use and convenient, we need to know how to use them safely - or face the consequences - as actress Scarlett Johansson recently found out when her cell phone was breached.  The next thing she knew, nude photos of her that she had apparently stored on an online service hit the internet.  She is currently working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to find the hacker.

How can celebrities like Scarlet Johansson, Jessica Alba, and Vanessa Hudgens, the most recent victims of phone hacking, not to mention politicians and high-level executives protect themselves from the same type of invasion of privacy? Apparently, Ms. Johansson’s recent incident is nothing compared to the years of hacking that The Guardian and other British press are being accused of using to obtain stories.  What are the implications if members of the intelligence community or other political figures have their phones hacked and what does that mean for national security?

The answer for the average consumer and the celebrity community is the same; install readily available software that detects viruses, malware, Trojan horses and more.  The current theory is that Ms. Johansson opened an email from her smart phone which let in a Trojan horse that spread to the email account and eventually led to the website where she had the photos stored.

This week we look at the dangers and the security and privacy issues regarding smart phones and other mobile computing devices.  We'll discuss if there are any effective solutions available on the market today to protect everyone from consumers to high-profile politicians and we’ll discuss tips for securing these 21st century toys and work tools.

Calling Anonymous- We Need Your Help!

Since the last show, we received numerous comments from listeners theorizing that hacking may be performed by agents of a state or government without actually being sponsored by the government itself. Apparently, it can be easy for a government employee to abuse the aura of official office to cover his own, personal activities.

When a government or an individual within a government (or a news journalist for that matter) misuses their resources to harm individuals, who typically don’t have equal capabilities, what can those individuals do to protect themselves or find the culprit? One wonders, if caught in such a predicament, if there might be some way to call on Anonymous or such groups for help?

Groups like Anonymous certainly have the forensic expertise to determine if the accidental deletion of all blog posts for a year, or an untimely system crash leading to the loss of entire web sites really was an accident or something more sinister. And they can certainly both protect an online operation and respond to threats of cyber actions. But would hacker groups really step in to help? Is that how they operate? And how would ordinary people, who use the Internet for all its wonderful benefits, but may not be ‘technophiles’ make contact with such groups?

ERP Systems - Not Designed for Custom Tailoring

Join Ajay Gupta and learn why customization of an ERP system in its early stages, may not only be expensive but also have unintended consequences in both the short and long term on the BlogTalkRadio Network Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are large-scale, complicated, and often expensive systems that run all of an organization’s administrative business functions. Because no two ERP systems function the same, frequently during the ERP implementation process, stakeholders identify a number of areas where the new system may not perform in a manner consistent with the organization’s legacy systems, such as a Mainframe system or disjointed and disparate administrative software -- the types of environments ERP systems oftentimes replace.

The most common mistake that companies make when dealing with such perceived shortcomings is to customize the new ERP.  Companies do this in an attempt to make the new ERP system function like the systems it is replacing or to replicate the organization’s existing operating practices. While there can be gains in terms of user convenience for such efforts, customization is not only expensive in the short term but also presents a management, maintenance, and software version control burden in the long term. Customization is not necessarily the best way to go.

This week on Technology Today, we’ll discuss my firm’s general rationale and process for avoiding customizing an ERP system, especially during early stages in its implementation. Until an organization has seen how the ERP supports all of its administrative and business functions, especially in the case where at tasks are performed only during certain stages in a fiscal year cycle; it may not be in position to know where enhancements will be most helpful to the organization. As ERP systems are integrated, changes in one area can have unexpected and unintended consequences in other areas.

Having your backup tapes picked up by an armored carrier and transported to a secure off- site location can be expensive; especially should you need to have your tapes brought back to your company in an emergency to restore files.

We’ll discuss how encrypted communications works, the costs involved, whether you need more than one system,  and what’s required of end users in order to make secure, electronic data backups a valuable option for your enterprise.

Along with delays on routes to beaches for the official kick-off of summer, better known as Memorial Day weekend, there were several reports a hacker group compromised PBS and issued a story reporting the rapper Tupac is alive and well in New Zealand.  There seems to be a rise in higher profile breaches recently (Lockheed Martin was compromised the previous weekend).  Taken together with word from the Pentagon that a cyber attack may be met with a conventional military response, we have to ask, are we in a ramp up period of a cyber war?
