Virtual Coaches in Healthcare: A Vision of the Future

Abstract:

With health care costs raising astronomically and the number of aging increasing, there are not enough economic or human resources in the way of care givers to meet society's needs. A confluence of technologies including miniature electronics, digital communications, human-computer interaction, robotics, and machine learning makes possible the creation of intelligent assistants that monitor and communicate with users, understand their needs and goals, and compensate for diminished capabilities as we age or suffer a disability. This talk will highlight the research challenges in creating virtual coaches that monitor user activities providing reminders and advice to reach personal and caregiver goals.

Daniel P. Siewiorek is the Buhl University Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.  He is the Director of the Quality of Life Technology Center, an NSF ERC in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh. Previously he served as head of CMU's Human Computer Interaction Institute.  His research interests span human interaction with intelligent systems, mobile and ubiquitous computing, and system reliability. He has designed or been involved with the design of nine multiprocessors, over two-dozen commercial computers, and over 20 generations of mobile systems.  He has written nine textbooks and is a recipient of major awards from AAEE, IEEE, and ACM. He is a Fellow of IEEE, ACM, and AAAS, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Blue Ribbon Panel discusses report recommendations after reviewing Antarctic science support operations

The U.S. Antarctic Program's Blue Ribbon Panel, established by the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Science Foundation, hosts a press conference to discuss the results of their report titled, "More and Better Science in Antarctica through Increased Logistical Effectiveness." The report reviews U.S. science support operations in Antarctica and discusses recommendations for increased logistical effectiveness to support this important science research.

Deception and Cybersecurity

Abstract
Deception is one of the most significant and pervasive social phenomena of our age, but the psychology of deception is poorly understood in the context of cybersecurity. We know little about important questions, including:  How does communication technology change the ways and reasons we deceive others? Can people detect if they are being lied to in online contexts any better (or worse) than offline? And can computer programs identify patterns on the Internet that reveal whether someone is lying or not that can exceed human-detection? In this talk we will examine these questions and recent research that may shed some light on the answers, focusing on the motivations for deception, a review of the state-of-the-art in deception detection research, and a sense of what the future holds for the way we lie.  

Speaker
Jeff Hancock is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Communication and Information Science. He is currently the Chair of the Information Science Department and the co-Director of Cognitive Science at Cornell University.  He is also Associate Editor of Discourse Processes. His work is concerned with how social media affect psychological and interpersonal processes, with a particular emphasis on understanding how language can reveal psychological and social dynamics, such as deception and credibility, emotional contagion, intimacy and relationships, and social support. Funding from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense supports his research, which has been frequently featured in the popular media, including the New York Times, CNN, NPR, and the BBC. Dr. Hancock earned his PhD in psychology at Dalhousie University, Canada, and joined Cornell in 2002.

Alone Together: Technology as the Architect of Our Intimacies

Abstract: Technology proposes itself an architect of our intimacies. And these days, technology offers us substitutes for direct face-to-face connection with people in a world of machine-mediated relationships on networked devices. As we instant message, e-mail, text, and Twitter, technology redraws the boundaries between intimacy and solitude. We talk of getting "rid" of our e-mails, as though these notes were so much excess baggage. Besides, it takes too long; across the generations, we would rather text than talk.

The world of our connections comes with so many bounties. But we begin to see that some things are amiss: sometimes we are too busy communicating to think, too busy communicating to create, and paradoxically, too busy communicating to connect with the people who matter. This has implications for children as they grow up, for grownups as they form relationships, and for institutions as they try to do their work.

The goals of this presentation is to sketch out the most important challenges facing both individuals and institutions as we face the new challenges of our digital age and to provide new tools for thinking through and addressing these issues. It is time to start a new kind of conversation - in our families, in our places of business, in our political institutions.

Bio: Sherry Turkle is  the Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT and the founder and director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self.   Prof. Turkle has published eight books, including "Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other." Prof. Turkle writes on the "subjective side" of people's relationships with technology, is an expert on mobile technology, social networking, and sociable robotics.  She has been named "woman of the year" by Ms. Magazine and among the "forty under forty" who are changing the nation by Esquire.

Barriers to the Science of Security

In the past few years, there has been significant interest in promoting the idea of applying scientific principles to information security. The main point made by information security professionals who brief at workshops and conferences seems to be that our field of information security is finally mature enough to begin making significant strides towards applying the scientific approach. Reports such as the Jason's report on the Science of Security point to examples and approaches we should take to achieve success in applying science to security. Audiences everywhere enthusiastically agree and thrash themselves for bypassing science all along, bemoaning the fact that we could be "so much further along" if we only did science. Of course, after the presentation is over, everyone goes back to the methods that have been used throughout our generation to create prototypes and tools with no regard for the scientific principles involved. Why? In this presentation, I explore the barriers to adopting a scientific approach to experimental information security projects, including:

•time to publish as a primary driver
•standard of peer reviews in conferences and journals
•expectation of a breakthrough in every publication

Based on overcoming these issues, I will explore a more practical way by focusing on changes in attitudes and processes necessary for science of security to become more the rule than the exception.

Speaker
Dr. Tom Longstaff is currently on a two-year assignment as the Technical Director of the Systems Behavior group within the DoD National Security Agency. Prior to coming to NSA in 2012, Tom was the Chief Scientist for the Cyber Missions Branch of the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). Tom is also the chair of the Computer Science, Information Assurance, and Information Systems Engineering Programs within the Whiting School at The Johns Hopkins University.
