Women Set Sights On STEM



In July, I was honored to be a part of an awards ceremony to honor 100 Women Leaders in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in the U.S. Every woman in the room had done remarkable things in their careers, and thanks to a variety of reasons, had chosen a field within STEM.

Inspired by that event, as I’m inspired by my daily work running the Department’s SMART (Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation) scholarship for service program, I think about how I arrived where I am today and how we can motivate a new generation of women to consider this career area.

There are five key things that I think are critical:

Exposure:  The more exposure women receive to a variety of different areas throughout their educational experience and work life, the more seeds will be planted that will help position them to accept future opportunities in leadership positions.   Exposure to STEM and great leaders, in particular, are keys to success and achievement.

This exposure keeps you motivated to do your best.

In high school, I thought that an engineer was someone who drove trains. But after a summer program exposed me to the civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical and industrial engineering tools, I was hooked. I am the beneficiary of that “Women in Engineering” program and I have never looked back.

Preparation: It is often said, “luck is where opportunity meets preparation”.  Success is sometimes viewed as luck because there are elements of timing, sponsorship, etc. but preparation has played a large part in that success.  Preparation involves study to focus on what you would like to do when you grow up, and what steps, i.e. courses, schools, programs can best prepare you for your dream job.

Preparation is practice; it’s on-the-job training in the form of teaching, researching assistantships and internships.  Such experiences give you the opportunity to try out a career for a period of time.

Mentoring: My concept of mentoring is a continuing legacy from my association with my own mentors and role models.  It means to lead by example, transfer knowledge, keep hands on the protégé for a short period, then let them fly, and lend an ear, hand, or give advice only when needed.

Sponsorship: Opening doors, in an active way, to give access and open opportunities is critical to sponsorship.  Sponsorship is advocacy for individuals who may or may not have the chance but for the good word of a sponsor on their behalf.  Sponsorship may be covert or overt and is critical to success.

Networking: Last, don’t forget to network. Do not be afraid to ask for help by consulting your network of family, friends and teachers.

Our goal as technical professionals should be to provide experiences to our younger generations, including young women, by mentoring them throughout their careers, preparing them to deal with whatever comes their way, creating an environment where it is OK to fail and encouraging them to assist others along the way.  Please join me in this important effort.

Updated Data Now Available on the Employment and Education Patterns of Underrepresented Groups in Science and Engineering


NSF today released a new report, "Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering"

The National Science Foundation (NSF) today released Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering, a compilation of the latest data drawn from a wide variety of sources.

The report provides statistical information about the participation of women, minorities and persons with disabilities in science and engineering education and employment. Tables continue to be updated as new data become available. A formal, interactive report, scheduled for release in January 2013, will highlight key information drawn from these data and will open the door to a rich set of associated resources.

This update contains a variety of information on the employment and education of scientists and engineers.

Updated employment tables include information on scientists' and engineers' occupations, median annual salaries, federal employment and employment status according to disability status, race, and ethnicity and sex.

Updated education tables display information on:

- freshman intentions to major in science and engineering (S&E);
- undergraduate enrollment in engineering;
- first university degrees awarded in selected countries;
- doctoral degrees in S&E;
- characteristics of S&E doctorate recipients' academic institution;
- primary source of support for doctorate recipients who are U.S. citizens and
  permanent residents; and
- employment plans of S&E doctorate recipients.

Data tables are available for download, either as Excel or PDF files.

Wolfenbarger Receives Fourth Star, Assumes Leadership of AFMC


Gen. Janet Wolfenbarger became the first female four-star general in the Air Force and assumed the top position of the major command responsible for the technology, acquisition, test and sustainment of the service’s current and future weapon systems during ceremonies.

Wolfenbarger took the reins of Air Force Materiel Command from Gen. Donald Hoffman during a change of command held at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Prior to the change of command, Wolfenbarger received her fourth star during a promotion ceremony.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz presided over the ceremony, during which he lauded AFMC’s excellence in keeping Air Force weapon systems ready, available and effective, and expressed his confidence that the command is in capable hands with Wolfenbarger.

“We honor Janet Wolfenbarger, an extraordinary public servant and a model Air Force officer,” Schwartz said. “Based on her record, Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley and I are entirely confident that she is up to the task of commanding this great organization.”

Wolfenbarger thanked Schwartz and Donley for their faith in her ability to lead AFMC and said she was looking forward to once again being part of the AFMC team.

“This opportunity only really exists because the Air Force has embraced a culture of diversity,” she said. “This culture has been cultivated over many years, driven by leadership at every level who acknowledge and appreciate the value of contributions from every airman.

“I promise I will serve in my role as AFMC commander with my absolute best effort,” Wolfenbarger continued. “What’s more, I have total confidence in the men and women of this command. We will always rise to the occasion and accomplish our difficult mission with determination and enthusiasm.”

Schwartz also highlighted Hoffman’s dedication to both AFMC’s mission and its workforce.

“Don, thank you for presiding over an impressive effort here at AFMC,” Schwartz said. “During your tenure, AFMC continued its longstanding excellence in research and development, test and evaluation, acquisition management, and logistics support.

“During some of the most challenging and turbulent times for our Air Force, General Hoffman has inspired mission success,” he continued. “Don and Jacki, thank you for your combined service to our Air Force, and for your very important contributions to our Nation’s security.”


Hoffman said he would most miss the quality of the people one finds in the Air Force, and the unquestioned level of trust that airmen exude.

“When you meet someone in the Air Force, you know they’ve taken an oath to defend the constitution and a pledge to live by core values of integrity, service and excellence,” he said. “Thanks to all of our airmen, it has been my good fortune to be part of the best Air Force in the world.  It was the best when I joined it.  It’s smaller now, its missions have changed, but it’s still the best.  And I have total confidence that those who follow me will keep it the best Air Force in the world.”

NASA Set To Host Future Female Explorers

WASHINGTON -- Eighty-four female high school students from 29 states will plan a simulated mission to Mars and experience life as an engineer or scientist when NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston hosts two events focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in June and July.

The Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars project, or WISH, is sponsoring two six-day summer camps for rising high school seniors. The young women will work in teams with female NASA mentors to develop mission plans for launching to Mars, living and working there, and integrating the many components necessary for a successful planetary mission. They will work within the confines of a fictitious budget and build several small mockups of vehicles to demonstrate a successful launch and landing of the Mars spacecraft.

"WISH gives some of our brightest future innovators a chance to experience some of the exciting challenges that NASA engineers and scientists face on a daily basis," said Johnson Deputy Director and four-time space shuttle astronaut Ellen Ochoa. "It shows the young women that there are a variety of opportunities for them in technical fields."

Young women participating June 24-29 will hear a first-hand account of life in space from NASA astronaut Shannon Walker. Participants July 8-13 will have a chance to speak with a current space station astronaut via ham radio as part of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station program, a NASA educational initiative that facilitates direct links between students and astronauts.

The young women were selected based on completion of interactive, online lessons focused on space exploration and mapped to national education standards, academic merits and geographic diversity. The WISH program encourages young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees and exposes them to the real-world applications of STEM careers at NASA. This program is in its second year. It began as a NASA accompaniment to the White House Council on Women and Girls.

NASA Astronaut Available for Interviews Before Station Flight

HOUSTON -- NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, making final preparations for a July launch to the International Space Station, will be available for live satellite interviews from 6 to 7 a.m. CDT Tuesday, June 26. The interviews will originate from Moscow and will be preceded at 5:30 a.m. by a feed of video documenting Williams' mission training.

Williams, a record-setting astronaut who lived and worked aboard the space station for six months in 2006, will be a flight engineer on the station's Expedition 32 crew. She will become commander of Expedition 33. Williams is scheduled to launch at 9:40 p.m. CDT July 14 (8:40 a.m. July 15 Baikonur time) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan with Flight Engineers Yuri Malenchenko of the Russian Federal Space Agency and Akihiko Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

Williams is a native of Needham, Mass., and a 1987 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. After earning her commission, Williams served in various roles as a Navy officer before being selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 1998. She received a master's degree from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.

Williams and her colleagues will be aboard the station during an exceptionally busy period that includes two spacewalks, the arrival of Japanese, U.S. commercial and Russian resupply vehicles, and an increasingly faster pace of scientific research.
